Yachai Kuri - a school on an oil well

The School of Yachai Kuri

While travelling with the Biocultural Cartographies at Yachai Kuri Waira told us the story of how the school was founded. The foundation stone of the school is the head of an oil well which was never activated. As soon as the community had heard that there was an oil well planned on this site they made all the necessary paper work in order to legally claim the piece of land as their own shortly before the pumping of the oil would have been started. They built a few buildings without much planning around the well so their claim would be legitimate. The school now houses many Inga and non Inga children that runs a curriculum teaching both ancestral Inga and national Spanish knowledge. This is one of the many Inga education Institutions that already exist spread throughout the territory that could also eventually serve as a base in the first steps of the pluriversity.
